about elsa

With more than 40.000 members ELSA is the biggest independent legal student association in de world. ELSA offers possibilities for international traineeships, deepening and broadening of the legal knowledge and personal help for law students. ELSA operates through local groups such as ELSA Nijmegen. Therefore every European law student can become a member of ELSA.

ELSA is founded on 4 May 1981 in Vienna by students from Poland, Austria, Hungary and West-Germany. Their goal was to encourage international contacts, and strengthen the bond between the students on both sides of the iron curtain. ELSA soon began to spread to more and more countries.

Now, thirty years later, ELSA has become an organization with local groups in more than forty countries. ELSA groups can be found at law faculties through all of Europe, from Finland to Italy and from Portugal to Azerbeidzjan.

This gigantic network communicates through different platforms. Local groups will meet each other on a national level, the national council meeting, and on an international level. Furthermore a lot of activities are organized for students on an international and a local level. Some examples are ELSA Day, the ELSA Mootcourt competition and the summer law schools.

The Student Trainee Exchange Program (STEP), gives law students and young lawyers opportunities o gain working experience abroad.

STEP is a trainee exchange program that enables law students and young lawyers to gain first hand experience of the substantive and procedural law as well as the culture of another country. The traineeships last between 2 weeks and 18 months and can take place in any law related area; law firms, courts, public institutions, banks, in-house legal departments, consulting firms and international organisations.

Before and during the traineeship, ELSA provides assistance with finding accommodation, applying for visas when necessary, and organizing social events to involve the trainee in the daily life of the local community.

Twice a year, ELSA International publishes the STEP newsletter, where all available traineeships are introduced. From the publication onwards, ELSA members can apply for the different traineeships. Last year we had over 170 STEP places all over Europe, Asia and North America!
